Frequently Asked Questions

Product lifetime and Certifications

Q: What is the normal product lifetime of Optrex LCDs?
A: For standard products, it is a minimum of 3 years. If a model change is required due to component end of life, then we will try every effort to make the new module backward compatible.
Q: Do Optrex LCDs have CE certification?
A: CE certification is typically given to end products. Since the LCD is a component, it does not carry CE certification.
Q: Are your TFT LCDs RoHS compliant?
A: All of Optrex TFT LCDs are RoHS compliant. Please contact your Optrex sales representative for confirmation.
Q: Do Optrex LCDs have UL certification?
A: Optrex active matrix displays is UL Reconized. The certification number is US E158720. The panels are certified under the manufacturer part number. Please contact your local sales representative to confirm that your display is certified.
Although the Optrex Passive LCD modules do not have UL certification, the circuit board material is UL certified (grade 94V-0).

Image Quality & Performance

Q: What is the viewing angle of your LCDs?
A: All of our TFT LCDs meet or exceed 130 degree (Horizontal) and 110 degree (Vertical) viewing angle. Our wide view film technology achieve viewing angle 160 degree (Horizontal) and 140 degree(Vertical). We also have In-Plane-Switching (IPS) technology that will achieve 85/85/85/85 viewing angle, which is the best technology for viewing angle and color reproduction. Please consult the individual part specification for details.
Q: What is Natural Color Matrix (NCM) technology?
A: NCM enables vivid reproduction of even the most subtle colors, such as pastels and flesh tones, and provides independent control of six colors without one color influencing any of the others. It supports 18-bit and 24-bit color and full motion video and compensates for any color shifts caused by LCD components such as CCFLs and optical films.
Read the NCM Technology WhitePaper.
Q: Are Optrex TFT LCDs sunlight readable?
A: There are basically two approches to increase a display's sunlight readability: increase the brightness level of the display, or reduce the ambient light reflection on the display surface. Optrex has several technology for outdoor readable applications, such as high brightness panel, transflective panel, anti-reflection and antiglare surface treatment, for more information, please check Outdoor Use TFT Displays for more information.
Q: Is the response time of your TFT LCDs enough for moving picture?
A: Yes. Optrex TFT LCDs response time is between 16ms to 25ms. Most of our newly developed LCD panels have 16ms response time, which is enough for moving picture. Please check the individual display specification for detail information.
Q: What is reverse scan function?
A: LCD displays typically feature a wider viewing angle from straight on or above, compared to the viewing angle from below. The reverse-scan feature enables customers to select either a normal scan or reverse scan to obtain the best intended image, depending on whether the mounted display will be viewed typically from above or below. Optrex TFT LCDs have reverse scan function.

Backlight (CCFL & LED)

Q: What is the lifetime of a CCFL backlight?
A: The defination of the CCFL lifetime is when the brightness level droped to 50% of its initial full brightness level. All the CCFL backlights for TFT LCDs are rated at 50,000 hours minimum. But most of the CCFL lamp unit can be replaced easily.
Q: Are your backlights replaceable?
A: Most of our backlights for the active modules are serviceable. Please check the individual part specification for information on a specific LCDM.
Q: What is the expected life of a LED backlight?
A: For industrial grade LED backlits TFT-LCD, the minimum lifetime is 60K hours.
Be sure to consult the individual part specification for information on a specific LCDM.
Q: How do I specify an inverter for an Optrex Display?
A: Most inverter manufacturers have a cross reference by LCD manufacturer.

Design & Specifications

Q: What is the temperature range of Optrex TFT LCDs?
A: For industrial application, operating temperature: -20 ~ 70 °C Storage temperature: -20 ~ 80 °C
For automotive application, operating temperature: -40 ~ 80°C Storage temperature: -40 ~ 80 °C
Q: Will your TFT LCD Modules operate at 5V?
A: Many of the Optrex TFT LCDs operate at both 3.3 and 5V. However, as the 3.3V becomes the new standard, the LSI manufactory might decide to only support 3.3V, that is not controlled by Optrex. Please check the individual part specification for information.
Q: Is MTBF data available for Optrex Displays?
A: The Mean time between failures (MTBF) data is not generally available. Under special circumstances MTBF data can be provided, but this is the exception, not the norm. Please contact your representative for further information.
Q: Can Optrex provide initialization codes for their modules?
A: Please check the controller specification for detail initialization codes. You can find the controller specification on our website under the diplay module part detail page.
